Juvederm® FAQ

What is Juvederm®?
Juvederm® is the only hyaluronic acid filller that has been approved by the FDA to last up to one year.* At your visit with the Image Skin Institute's Dr. Kessler at our Mesa, AZ, clinic, he can discuss Juvederm® treatment options with you.

Juvederm® injectable gel has been called a "next-generation" smooth consistency gel dermal filler. It helps to instantly restore your skin's volume and smooth away facial wrinkles and folds like your "smile lines" or "parentheses" (the nasolabial folds / creases that run from the bottom of your nose to the corners of your mouth). Juvederm® comes in two formulations, Juvederm® Ultra and Juvederm® Ultra Plus. Dr. Kessler can help you decide which, if any, is right for you.

What does Juvederm® do?
Juvederm® temporarily adds volume to facial tissue and restores a smoother appearance to the facial area.

What is Juvederm® indicated for?
Juvederm® Ultra and Juvederm® Ultra Plus injectable gels are indicated for injection into the mid to deep dermis (below the outer layer of skin). They are designed to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial folds (the creases running from the bottom of your nose to the corners of your mouth, also known as smile lines or parentheses). As skin ages, the sun (especially the intense sun found in the Phoenix / Scottsdale / Chandler / Mesa area) and other factors cause damage that can express itself as wrinkles and folds. Juvederm® can help the appearance of such damaged skin.

Why does Juvederm® come in two formulations?
Juvederm® is available in two formulations so that it can be tailored to your unique needs. When you have your initial consult with the Image Skin Institute's Dr. Kessler at our Mesa, AZ, clinic, he can help determine what is right for you. Juvederm® Ultra provides versatility in contouring and volumizing facial wrinkles and folds. Juvederm® Ultra Plus is a more robust formulation for volumizing and correcting deeper folds and wrinkles.

What makes Juvederm® different from other dermal fillers?
Juvederm® is the ONLY hyaluronic acid (HA) filler FDA approved to last up to 1 year.* Its unique manufacturing process provides a high concentration of cross-linked HA for results that last. It works to create a smooth consistency gel that flows easily into the skin and provides a smooth, natural look and feel. All of the other hyaluronic acid dermal fillers that are currently on the market consist of granular consistency gels. In addition, Juvederm® is the first hyaluronic acid dermal filler that has demonstrated its safety and effectiveness in persons of color.

What is hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance found in all mammals. It helps to hydrate and add volume to your skin. Hyaluronic acid has also been used for more than 20 years for injection into arthritic joints to aid movement as well as for wound repair and eye surgeries.

What is cross-linked hyaluronic acid?

"Uncross-linked" hyaluronic acid in its natural form presents itself in a liquid state. "Cross-linking" is a process that is used to make hyaluronic acid into a gel product that can be injected into the skin for long-lasting results.

How is Juvederm® injectable gel used in treatment?
Dr. Kessler eases Juvederm® injectable gel into the skin using a fine needle. Juvederm® will help to temporarily fill in and augment the treatment area and smooth moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds such as "smile lines" or "parentheses" (nasolabial folds) and "marionette lines" (oral commissures). Juvederm® temporarily adds volume to the skin and may give the appearance of a smoother surface. It can help aged skin (especially skin that has been subjected to the intense Phoenix / Scottsdale / Chandler / Mesa sun) gain more volume.

What will treatment with Juvederm® accomplish?
Juvederm® will help to smooth moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds. Most patients need one treatment to achieve optimal wrinkle smoothing. This one treatment could smooth your lines and wrinkles for up to 1 year. When you visit with Dr. Kessler at our Mesa, AZ, clinic, he will discuss what you should expect from your initial treatment and when he recommends scheduling another appointment.

Is treatment with Juvederm® painful?
Any injection that involves a needle may cause some discofort, and Juvederm® is no exception. Injections may cause some discomfort during and after the injection. The smooth consistency gel of Juvederm® allows Dr. Kessler to administer it easily and smoothly. Juvederm® is injected directly into the skin using a fine needle in an attempt to reduce injection discomfort. Dr. Kessler may discuss whether to anesthetize the treatment area to further minimize discomfort. All Juvederm® treatments are done out-patient at our Mesa, AZ, clinic.

How long does treatment usually take?
The injection process takes only about 15 minutes. In addition, Dr. Kessler will meet with you prior to treatment at our Mesa, AZ, facility to discuss Juvederm® and determine a treatment course.

What kind of doctor can provide treatment with Juvederm® injectable gel?
Any authorized healthcare professional can administer Juvederm® injectable gel, but dermatologists, plastic surgeons, ophthalmologists, otolaryngologists (ear, nose, and throat doctors), or physicians specializing in cosmetic procedures are generally more experienced. The Image Skin Institute's Dr. Kessler is a board-certified dermatologist who has been practicing in Mesa, AZ, since 1982. In addition, he is a past President of the Sonoran Dermatological Society. He has an intimate understanding of the skin, and designs each course of treatment uniquely for you.

Does the correction last forever?
No. Correction is temporary; therefore, touch-up injections as well as repeat injections are usually needed to maintain optimal corrections. Follow-up appointments can be scheduled at our Mesa, AZ, office on the day of your treatment, or any time by phone.

How long do results last?
Juvederm® is the ONLY hyaluronic acid filler FDA approved to last up to 1 year.* Dr. Kessler will discuss with you how long you can expect to see results in your particular case.

What are the possible side effects of Juvederm® injectable gel?
Most side effects are mild or moderate in nature, and their duration is short lasting (7 days or less). The most common side effects include, but are not limited to, temporary injections site reactions such as redness, swelling, lumps/bumps, bruising, pain/tenderness, firmness, itching, and discoloration. There is a risk of infection with all skin injections, and Juvederm® is no exception.

Can people with different skin tones/colors be treated with Juvederm®?
Yes. In fact, Juvederm® injectable gel is the first FDA-approved hyaluronic acid dermal filler that has proven its safety and effectiveness in persons of color. Studies with Juvederm® showed no increased risk of hyperpigmentation or hypertrophic scarring in patients of color.
